- The cost of the sculpture was $18,000 and a New York sculptor, Olin Warner, was commissioned to design it. Mr. Warner came to Portland for the sculpture's dedication on September 22, 1888.
- Olin Levi Warner was born in Massachusetts in1848. In the 1880 United States Census, he is listed as a single male, age 32, sculptor, living in the Benedick building, East Washington Square, New York City. The 1876 New York City Directory lists Olin L. Warner, sculptor, at 44 W. 80th, New York City. The 1877 directory lists him at 765 Broadway. The 1889-90 directory lists him as living at 192 West 10th with business as 80 Washington Square. According to the database, New York City Deaths, 1892-1902 (Provo, UT), Warner died on August 14, 1886.
