The building was owned by Beno and Ballis, an investment firm. William Beno formed the real estate partnership with William Ballis in 1890, and subsequently became influential in the development of the Alphabet Historic District. The firm had an office at 54 Front Street, Portland. This image was included in the documentation to support a nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, a program of the National Park Service.
